Train hits garbage truck at crossing

The driver of a Waste Management Services garbage truck was seriously injured when a northbound Amtrak passenger train struck the truck about 9:05 a.m., Thursday, at a crossing near the Moore Cemetery Road and University Street intersection on the north side of Carlinville.

Officials have not yet released the name of the truck driver, who was taken by Dunn’s Ambulance Service to Carlinville Area Hospital where he was stablilized before being airlifted to St. John’s Hospital, Springfield. The man reportedly sustained a broken leg and skull fracture when the train slammed into the right side of the truck at almost dead center.

The force of the impact sheared the cab and bed off the truck frame. The cab came to rest on the west side of the track, while the truck bed landed in an area on the east side of the railroad right of way. The hydraulic apparatus to lift dumpsters for emptying landed nearly 300 feet away behind a Carlinville Township machine shed. Garbage from the truck was strewn over a wide area.

The truck frame was wedged under the front of the train engine and was still there when the train came to a stop about a half-mile from the site of the impact.
