Tractor-Trailer Head-On Crash Kills Driver
The driver of a tractor-trailer careened across a median on northbound Interstate 77 just before noon Tuesday and crashed head-on into a tractor-trailer traveling south, killing the driver.
Hillsville Volunteer Fire Department spokesman David Young said the driver of the truck traveling south, 54-year-old, Sabato Lettieri, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the other vehicle was flown to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. His condition wasn’t immediately known.
Young said witnesses told him that they saw the trailer of the truck swerving before the driver lost control.
Interstate 77 south was closed near mile marker 21. One northbound lane was also blocked while crews worked to clean up the crash.
All lanes were expected to be opened by 5 p.m.

I did not know Sabato, but somehow now I feel I do. You see on Tuesday or paths crossed on his trip to the top of the mountain. Im a driver as he was and we made that hundred miles not knowing anything about each other. He passed me up the hills I passed him going down. We were both in our own worlds, doing our job to the best of our ability. At the end he was in front of me. He got to the top of the mountain first. There the “Lord” waited to take him home. May you rest in peace “Sabato Lettieri”. The next time we run togther we won’t be strangers my friend. My sympathy to all of his family..
