The state plans next year to expand a ban on big rigs in the left lane in hopes of bolstering highway safety and managing freight congestion in the Dallas area.

Prohibitions are already in place on stretches of Interstates 20 and 30 under a test program started in 2005. The Texas Department of Transportation and North Central Texas Council of Governments have decided to install the limits on some of the region’s busiest stretches.

By summer 2010, the prohibitions will include most of I-20 and I-30 in the Dallas area, as well as I-45 south of downtown. And over the next decade or so, highway officials plan to introduce the restrictions on I-35E, I-35W, Central Expressway and perhaps other roads.

They want to do this for “safety reasons”? How is it safe to make all these trucks stay in the right lane? Because, all the fourwheelers will be in the right lane as well.
