Customs officers seize more than a ton of marijuana in Pharr
HIDALGO – U.S. customs officers found more than a ton of marijuana hidden inside a tractor-trailer full of produce Wednesday.
An agricultural specialist at the cargo facility at the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge first noticed discrepancies in the semitrailer’s floor as it headed north into the United States.
A narcotic detector dog sniffed out the drugs, and officers found 270 marijuana packages concealed beneath the commercial shipment.
The driver, a 61-year-old Mexican citizen from Tamaulipas, was not arrested.
The drugs weighed close to 2,350 pounds.
Less than two hours before, customs officers at the Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge had discovered 133 pounds of marijuana inside the tires of a 1ᚥ Jeep Cherokee.
