Millions of people are distracted while driving every day, all over the world.
Not necessarily by “texting and driving” alone, but there are lots of “distractions” while driving. Cell phones have become a major tool in the trucking industry and have been for a while.
Without cell phones some drivers would not be able to be dispatched on loads. Owner operators, running their business, have to be on the cell phone in order to be successful in their business. A complete ban would be devastating at least.
The Department of Transportation (DOT) is working hard to eliminate the use of Cell phones completely while driving any vehicle. With a ban in full operation now for all government employees that started just after the 2009 Distracted Driving Summit U.S. Secretary Ray LaHood along with President Obama implemented the ban. While I will agree that using a cell phone while driving is dangerous, without the use of a headset, I still don’t think a complete ban is needed. I think “texting and driving” should be banned while driving, this service should be unavailable while the vehicle is in motion.
Oprah Winfrey is doing a show today on Distracted Driving. The show is featuring Jennifer Smith -president/Founding Board Member of a new advocacy group called FocusDriven.org. They were formed just after the Distracted Driving Summit held this past year. You can check Oprah’s website for local times.
